Sprinkler Installation Rules (NFPA 13, Ch. 9–14) 

This course covers the fundamental rules for sprinkler spacing, location, and obstruction to ensure NFPA compliance.

Key topics include:

• 1. Identify the (4) different sprinkler system types and their applications. 
  2. Understand the (8) different sprinkler type categories and their usage limitations. 
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of basis sprinkler spacing allowances. 
  4. Describe how to determine the coverage area of a sprinkler. 
  5. Identify both unobstructed and obstructed construction installation rules for sprinkler application. 
  6. Identify the sprinkler deflector distance rules for the various construction types. 
  7. Demonstrate a knowledge of ceiling pocket rules for various sprinkler categories. 
  8. Demonstrate a knowledge of cloud ceilings rules for various sprinkers. 
  9. Identify obstructions and how to apply the rules in NFPA-13 to address them. 
  10. Describe the “special” obstruction rules for CMSA and ESFR storage sprinklers. 
  11. Understand the (3) obstruction zones for each sprinkler type and how to apply the rules in each zone. 
  12. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of sprinkler spray patterns for standard coverage, extended coverage and residential sprinklers and why the obstruction rules are so important to proper fire control. 

All members are encouraged to participate in the AFSA-FL/FFSA annual Joint Legislative Planning Day.  This interactive session is your opportunity to help define our industry's top legislative issues.  Participate in group discussions with both association's lobbying firms, talk details in break-out groups, and help develop stronger relationships with legislative guests.  It's time to start planning for the 2026 Legislative Session.
